GPS’ Top 5 Tracks Of February 2014

From booty shakin’ bass to dance floor smashers to crazy techno, my Top 5 for February’s got you covered!

5. Mystical – Shake Ya Ass (Wuki Bootleg)

Wuki is the solo project of Kris Barman, a former member of the electro rock group Innerpartysystem. His recent release on Skrillex’s digital imprint NEST IV was followed by a series of bootlegs dubbed “Wukileaks,” and they’re free! As the first release, Wuki dropped his thumpin bootleg of a classic: Mystical’s “Shake Ya Ass.” The nostalgia is strong with this one.

4. Dude Skywalker – Let’s Get It Perculatin

From one of the Dude’s more recent releases, “Let’s Get It Perculatin” samples Mary J Blige’s “Family Affair” and tones the voice down for a deeper pitch. The absurdly smooth bassline that is reminiscent to that of The Human Leagues’ “Don’t You Want Me” vibe, albeit slower and funkier.

3. Maelstrom – Tank Driving

Be it after a long night out or just a nighttime cruise, “Tank Driving” is the type of tune that you need to play in a car at night. This is the type of song that can fill you with a want to ponder in deep thoughts.

2. Justin Martin – Buggin

OG Dirtybird, killer producer and dj, and pizza aficionado. What’s honestly not to like about Justin Martin? His latest original, released as the first track of Dirtybird’s Dirtybord BBQ compilation, is one fucker of a wild ride. With an intro that could be confused for an opening theme of a traveling circus showcase, “Bugged” is nothing short of weird (which is good). The ensuing melody is accompanied by various drums only to lead to what can only be described as a wall of funky bass.

1. Strip Steve – The Funktion

Strip Steve is a prominent name of the Boysnoize Records crew. Having released his album Micro Mega in 2012, 2013 was a bit of a quite year for the German producer overall. But he started 2014 with a bang with his new EP The Funktion. The title track (and vocal sample) is nothing short of awesome. With the title sample almost sounding like it’s saying “The Fun Shit” and it’s pounding drums, cymbals, claps and snares being the main theme, this tune is here to give your ears a flurry of crazy and fun.
