This May At Bardot: Kastle, Digitalism, Duke Dumont, The Gaslamp Killer
The dance scene is looking grim, but that doesn’t mean we have to give up on it completely. It’s time to rinse all that bro house from your ears and replace it with smooth, funky and outright crazy tunes. Bardot has four upcoming shows this May that have us excited beyond all logical reason.
That’s obviously more than enough reason for you to want to go.KASTLE
When: Thursday, May 2, 2013. 10 p.m.
Lineup: Kastle, Austin Paul, JBZ & Niko Saks and Goodroid
Price: Starting at $15 (early bird already sold out!)
First, we have Kastle. He recently released his self-titled album, which has gotten great reviews. Covering various tempos, his music has underlying themes of mostly broken beats, happy melodies and chords, and lots of soul. Opening for him will be Miami’s own Austin Paul, who will be celebrating his Velvet EP release party. Paul is a featured artist on Kastle’s label Symbols and also worked with Kastle on the self-titled release.
When: Saturday, May 11, 2013. 10 p.m.
Lineup: Digitalism, Sean Drake and Will Buck.
Price: Starting at $17 (early bird already sold out!)
The following week, Digitalism (yes, Digitalism) is performing as part of the Art Walk showcase. Formed in 2004 by members Jens “Jence” Moelle and Ismail “Isi” Tüfekçi, Digitalism cites Daft Punk and movie soundtracks as their main musical influences. They released an all-vinyl mixtape last year, and have been on a big DJ tour kick. I am hoping the duo will play a laid-back set that perfectly compliments Bardot’s atmosphere (though the two can easily bang out).
When: Tuesday, May 14. 10 p.m.
Lineup: Duke Dumont, Turbo, Blase Boys Club, Pirate Stereo, Santiago Caballero and Panic Bomber.
Price: Starting at $10 (early bird already sold out!)
The Tuesday after, you’re in for a disco treat: Duke Dumont. Hailing from the United Kingdom, Duke Dumont (real name Adam Dyment) is knows for his single “Need U (100%),” which entered the UK singles chart at number one to great acclaim. It is interesting to note that the lineup includes Blase Boys Club, because that is another alias Duke uses to produce under, possible surprise extra set by Adam?
When: Sunday, May 26, 2013. 10 p.m.
Lineup: The Gaslamp Killer, N/P (Nuri & PO$HSTRONAUT) with Denzel Curry & friends, JBZ and Niko Sacks.
Price: Starting at $15
We top you off with The Gaslamp Killer. All I have ever learned from this guy’s sets is to expect the unexpected. Seriously though, I’ve seen a video of him dropping a jazz song, like, real jazz. Based in Los Angeles, he helped found Low End Theory, “L.A.’s monolithic weekly showcase for uncut beat-driven tracks.” With that, and DJ Shadow as a main inspiration in becoming a DJ, you can defnitely expect something crazy different than the norm.
