Alternative Hair Show: Entirely Epic
As with anything else, fashion is most interesting when designers and stylists get experimental and push the envelope. Even if the result may not be ready-to-wear, the sheer artistry drives our mainstream culture and breathes fresh life into the scene. As a perfect example, the Alternative Hair Show isn’t about practicality, but it’s still one of the coolest things we’ve ever seen.
Founder Tony Rizzo started the show in 1983 in honor of his son, Valentino, who passed away of childhood leukemia. At the time, there wasn’t a lot known about the disease or how to treat it, and Rizzo wanted to do something to raise money and awareness toward the goal of a cure. To date, the Alternative Hair Show has raised more than £8 million (more than $12 million) for leukemia research, and continues to coordinate bigger and bigger events in honor of Valentino and others who’ve been effected.
At the same time, the Show gives stylists a place to be recognized, show off their skills and be honored as visionaries. A traveling event, each Show is centered around a different theme. 2011 is the year of Illusion, with the next Show coming up on Oct. 16 in London, at Royal Albert Hall. Tickets are available on their website.
Here are some pictures from the Sept. 28 show in Moscow, and we’re quite sure they’ll inspire, awe and basically just blow minds. Enjoy (and donate!)
