Miranda July’s Eleven Heavy Things
Miranda July‘s art is really heavy. That might be why her newest exhibition at the MOCA Pacific Design Center is titled “Eleven Heavy Things.” Miranda July is an artist and a filmmaker. She directed the film Me and You and Everyone We Know. She also wrote a book I enjoyed quite a bit, titled “No One Belongs Here More Than You.” Needless to say, she branches out in her creative output.
Eleven Heavy Things is a collection of interactive sculptures, consisting of pedestals and tablets (oddly reminiscent of the cut-outs you put your head through at the county fair.) Each one has its own message which, in true Miranda July fashion, explores ideas of self-doubt and awkwardness. It’s quirky and fun but heavy messages permeate throughout.
