REPTAR: Getting Stuck In Your Id.

REPTAR: Getting Stuck In Your Id.

Oblange Fizz Ya'll

I met Reptar when I opened for them on New Years Eve in Orlando earlier this year. This wasn’t your average gig. It took place in a sports bar immediately following the hometown team’s big win in a bowl game. The place was alive with a line down the street, and magic (a.k.a. testosterone) in the air. It’s only fitting that the headliners bring in the new year proper. That they did.

Reptar, hailing from Athens Georgia, knows how to rock. Well, space-rock specifically. They have been compared to The Talking Heads, Prince, and Animal Collective.  I just classify them as having their own sound, somewhere in the middle of indie/electro/pop/jam/fucking good. They have worked with super producer Ben Allen (Sean P. Diddy Combs, Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Matt & Kim). Check out their new video for their song Blast Off.

They were just named #4 on NME’s Top New Bands for 2011, which is great news as they kicked off a tour here in the US. First stop was Chicago. I had the pleasure of meeting up with the boys here in the Chi last week, and they told me they were super excited to tour with Art Brut and play Governors Ball in New York. The band is also gearing up to play this year’s Lollapalooza.

All you Gainesville people get the pleasure of seeing them a week before Lolla. We here at Wet Paint and our buddies at Organic Vision decided to bring them back for you all. You’re welcome. They will be playing July 27th at the Backstage Lounge off Main Street, with support from one of my favorite DJs, Whiskey Business. I heard a rumor that I might get to play with them again when they return to Chicago … fingers crossed.

Their new five-song EP, Oblange Fizz Ya’ll, drops July 11th on Make Records Not Bombs. You can listen to the whole thing here below! Check their website to buy the EP or make sure you pick up a copy at the next show – and a shirt you cheap fucks.

But seriously, you need to listen to these dudes already.

  1. [...] Reptar have been one of our favorite up-and-coming acts. They’re EP Oblangle Fizz, Y’all got “Stuck in our ID” like woah, yo. The five-piece band’s fresh and funky sound is reminiscent of hipster favorites Of Montreal and Animal Collective, but with a uniquely childish and fanciful flavor. They recently dropped their debut album Body Faucet, featuring some old favorites and plenty of new, catchy material. Not only is their music infectious, their live shows are energetic and mesmerizing. Don’t miss the boys from Athens, Ga., tearing their home state a new one. [...]
